O'Grady was born in the city of Wheaton, Illinois she graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her parents raised her in Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at North High School of Wheaton. She appeared on a few commercials on television, but then moved from Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. Other guest appearances include TV shows as well as independent films, among numerous other roles. Donna Abandando was her first large role on ABC's crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the squad between 1993 and 1996. The actress was nominated in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for every year.
